Stained Glass :: Rose
Just thought I should share my latest stained glass piece with everyone.

(click for larger)

It's hard to see the texture, but the blue glass is mottled on the back, the clear glass has some faint lines in it, and the flower is made with cathedral glass.

It's 10"x16", cost about $70 in materials, was done with copper foil, lead solder, zinc border, and finished with a black patina. 24 pieces of glass total, one of which shattered mid-process and had to be pulled out and replaced. Took me about 10 hours or so to assemble. Lots of work, but a lot of fun as well. :D

nice. I've been wanting to comission something for my living room window. They used to have leaded stain glass in them, but they got looted. How much $ material do you think would it take to make a 17x45 pane?

It's funny you should ask that - I'm just about to take a class on lead came stained glass windows. The cost depends, of course, on how many different styles of glass you want.

I would say that, on average, it costs about $13/sqft for the glass, with roughly 1/3rd or so that gets wasted due to the shape of the glass pieces. I've never purchased lead came (which is what is used in windows), but I'm sure it's not that much more than solder.

All told, I'd say it'd probably run around $150 for materials to build the window... but that's just a total guess. If you'd want something made professional, I think the going rate is usually about $50 + $75-$100/sq ft.
